What We Look for in an Employment Discrimination Client in New York City

Hi, my name is Alex Granovsky. And I’m the managing member of Granovsky & Sundaresh. We’re an employment law firm with our main office right here in New York City.

A question I get asked a lot is what we look for in an employment discrimination client. So that’s what today’s little video is going to be about.

Basically, there are three things.

First, foremost, and most importantly, you’ve got to be a good person. Listen, I will tell you, we are lucky enough that our practice is well established. And if you are a creep, maniac, jerk, difficult to work with, or obnoxious, we’re just not going to work with you.

Ten years ago or more now, we were starting out and were so desperate we would represent just about anybody. But that’s over.

So that’s the first thing: be nice, be polite, and be respectful. We’re all people working together.

Number two, you must have a compelling story – and not just a compelling story but a compelling story of discrimination or wrongdoing. You know, it’s not enough to say, “I just got fired and it sucks.” Yes, it does suck. And I’m sorry. That’s not enough. There’s got to be some real discrimination and wrongdoing.

And I will tell you, we ask everyone, “Why do you think you were like, go?” The number one answer by far: “Well, my boss was jealous of me because I was the best ever at my job and that’s why I was let go.” That may be true and that sucks, but it’s not illegal. It’s got to be wrongdoing. It’s got to be discrimination. You know, it’s got to be that kind of story.

And third, and finally, you have to have some evidence. And look, it’s not going to be some memo that says, “Let’s fire all the women” or “Let’s get rid of Jeff because he’s black.” No, obviously, but there has to be something. There has to be some evidence of discrimination or wrongdoing by your employer. Otherwise, there’s what’s true and there’s what you can prove. And it’s the ladder that lawsuits are about. And, if you don’t have any evidence beyond your suspicion, unfortunately, you probably don’t have a good case.

So those are the big three: be decent, have a good compelling story and evidence to back it up. If you have that, we will probably want to represent you. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. Take care.
