Hi, my name is Alex Granovsky and I’m the Managing Member of Granovsky & Sundaresh. We’re a labor and employment law firm located in New York City.
In this video, I’m going to go over three things that I wish I knew before I started this practice. And if you’re thinking about starting your own plaintiff side employment law practice, these are things you should consider.
First, I didn’t realize I would be working much harder than I did when I was in big law. The work is different, not the billing hours. But I am working on the practice, on our cases, the management of the whole thing much more than I ever did in big law – though frankly, I kind of coasted through big law a little bit. But that’s neither here nor there. But that’s one thing. I didn’t realize I would be working much harder. I’m much happier, but I’m working way harder than I ever did.
Number two, starting a practice is a lot less expensive than then you probably think. You know, you need malpractice insurance. You need a phone line, although you probably already have one. You need a computer, though if you got through law school you probably already have one. And you need some kind of online legal research. It’s not a ton of money. And if you want proof that you could start a law firm on a shoestring budget, look at the people who do it. Most people who start their own law firm, especially out of law school, they’re doing it out of desperation, not because they have a world of options open to them. If they can do it, if I could have done it, so can you.
And along those lines, the third thing that I didn’t realize, and I’m so grateful for, there are so many people who help along the way. Our firm was helped by countless attorneys who were further along the process of either having their own firm or in big law, or whatever the case may be.
I’ve always tried to repay all the kindnesses we’ve received. So, in fact, if you’re thinking about doing your own thing, shoot me an email. Give me a call. I love this stuff. And I’m not alone. So many great people shared forms, advice, even just support when you’re starting your own thing and every day is a nightmare and everything is a crisis.
There were so many helping hands and I wish I knew that going in. It would have made it a lot less scary. And I hope this video makes it a lot less scary for you. And like I said before, if you want to talk about it, shoot me an email. Give me a call. I love this stuff. Hope this video helped. Thanks for watching. Take care.
